Outsourcing of BA/BE studies-Focus Europe

Generic companies in Europe outsource BA/ BE services to CROs . 8 out of world’s top 10 generic companies have a European presence and between them, they capture nearly 28-30% of the highly fragmented generic business globally. The top European markets are UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Netherlands, along with other notable companies in Eastern Europe, many of which have been subjects of frequent M&A activity in the region. Each of these markets offers unique set of challenges and advantages in selling generic products. This in turn has an effect on the product pipeline and subsequently the amount of work which gets outsourced.

An analysis done by Goldman Sachs showed that there has been a constant increase in global R & D outsourcing market & CRO share. In 2005, the market earned nearly $13 billion and the revenue has reached $17 billion in 2007.

There are approximately over 1200 organizations worldwide involved in clinical research, including pharmaceutical and biotechnology in-house clinical research, site management organizations (SMOs), academic medical centres, private research sites, and CROs, all of which compete for contracts from sponsors (pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies). CROs conducting BA/BE studies are part of this large pie. The author wishes to explore the potential of this market in the consequent sections.

Generic companies and the drugs they produce are now an important part of the major pharmaceutical markets. The growth rate in the industry is increasing, nine of the top ten fastest growing pharmaceutical companies are generic and the demand for cheaper drugs is increasing.
